HBA Unveils Rendering of Devou
Park Overlook Gardens
(Ft. Mitchell, KY) The Home Builders Association of Northern
Kentucky (HBA) has unveiled the artist’s rendering of the Devou Park
Overlook Memorial Gardens that it plans to build this year in
recognition of its 50th Anniversary. Studer Residential Designs
developed the original design.
The landscaped gardens, accented with period street lamps and
wrought-iron park benches, will be partially funded through sales of
brick pavers, which will adorn the walk and patio areas. Contributions
of labor, materials and engineering will be donated by members of the
organization.
Bricks can be purchased by calling (859) 331-9500, by visiting the HBA
web site at www.hbanky.com or e-mail nancyb@hbanky.com. The cost is $50
for a single line of text or $100 for up to 3 lines of text, with a
company logo. Contributions to the effort are tax deductible and should
be sent to the Home Builders Care Assistance Fund of Northern Kentucky,
209 Grandview Drive, Ft. Mitchell, KY, 41017.
According to HBA President, Mike Kegley, “our organization was founded
in Covington in 1955 and we operated an office on 5th Street for many
years. We wanted to leave a lasting memorial to the whole community and
we felt that there would be no better place for such a memorial than in
Devou Park, which is truly a regional park.”
In addition, to the design work, donated by Studer Residential Designs,
all landscaping plants and labor have been donated by Egbers Land
Design. Donations for the benches, stone walls and lamp posts are still
needed.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN CARPENTRY PRE-APPRENTICE PROGRAM
Provider: Home Builders Association of
Northern Kentucky
Supervisor: Mike Enzweiler, Director of Education
Timeframe
The program began Saturday October 15, 2005 and met 16 Saturday
mornings,
8:30 a.m. – noon, at the J.D. Patton Area Technology Center, Edgewood,
KY, concluding Saturday, March 11, 2006.
Class
After advertising the program in local newspapers and contacting social
and community agencies, 29 letters of invitation were sent out with 14
verbal commitments to attend. A total of 9 students actually attended
the first class. Beginning with the second class date, seven persons
continued to attend on a regular basis and completed the program. The
class make-up was 6 males and 1 female.
Instructors: Ron Colyers, The Drees Co., Dave Harwood, local contractor,
Eddy Anderson, YouthBuild
Instruction covered: introduction to the trade, basic construction math
with practical application, resume preparation, floor/wall/roof framing,
a construction site visit, two guest speakers and hands-on shop
projects. Of the seven who completed the program, three are available
for immediate placement with the remainder ready shortly after settling
personal/family issues.
Materials
Students were provided a textbook and a basic set of hand tools which
included: handsaw, tape measure, safety glasses, hammer, level and speed
square. Some tools and materials were provided by HBA members. The
textbook was the HBI Carpentry book of the Residential Construction
Academy Series. We have also adopted the series for our Carpentry and
HVAC Apprenticeship Programs. Graduates are also offered a one year
tuition paid scholarship toward our 2-year Residential Carpentry
Apprenticeship Program which dates back to 1967. Our Apprenticeship
Program is a natural follow-up to the program.
Comments
Participant comments about the program were excellent with one student
stating that “the class offered much more than he anticipated.” Through
this pilot program, the HBA of Northern Kentucky was able to open the
doors to the potential of many other African Americans who may be
interested in construction-related careers.

The Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky (HBA) presented
certificates of completion to 9 new Latino carpenters in graduation
ceremonies held last week at the Centro De Amistad in Erlanger. The program
was co-sponsored by the Centro De Amistad and the Catholic Social Services
of Northern Kentucky.
The group represents the second class of Latino carpenters who have
completed the 20-week program developed and delivered by the HBA in the last
year. A total of 27 persons have completed the program since its inception
in March of 2004.
Those graduating from the 2005 class include Ivan Del Aguilao, Juan G. Del
Aguilao, Saul D. Moreno, Moises Pico, Jorge Sanchez, Jesus Palacios De La
Vega, Daniel Vera, Jose Villanueva and Jose Selvin Guevara.
The program is completely funded by the Home Builders Care Assistance Fund
of Northern Kentucky. Several companies affiliated with the HBA donated
materials and tools for the course. The HBA offers several scholarships to
its two and four-year Evening Trades Program in carpentry, electricity and
HVAC. Job placement is also a feature of the program.
“We are proud to be able to provide this opportunity for Latinos who have an
interest in construction-related careers, “said Mike Kegley, HBA president.
There is tremendous amount of opportunities for Latinos to advance in our
industry”, he added. “We couldn’t have organized the program without the
help of Sr. Juana Mendez”, Kegley indicated.
A construction trades training program for African Americans is planned this
fall. For details contact Mike Enzweiler, Director of Education, (859)
331-9500.
